Ryan Williams arrival!

DJ and I welcomed our baby boy on July 3rd, 2009! He weighed 9lbs 14 oz and was 22 1/2 inches long! Our decision for a scheduled c section was the right choice! In our case, the estimated weights on the ultra sounds were very accurate!

We arrived at Highland hospital at 5:45 am, and I got hooked up to the monitors and an IV. I think the IV was the worst part of the whole thing! I have never had one before, and the nurse tried my right arm first.......that failed and left an enormous bruise! She got it in the left, but that took some time too, ouch! We had 2 hours to wait, and in that two hours.....so many people came in. Nurses, Dr's, residents, you name it......they came in to introduce themselves and see if we had any questions. I am thankful we had filled out pre admission paperwork, so there was very little to do but sign a few papers. I really wasn't nervous, and felt bad for laughing with DJ while a couple of other moms in labor were crying behind other curtains (we were "on deck" in triage)!

We were finally on our way to OR around 8am. DJ was in his scrubs, and had to wait outside while I got my spinal. It was a piece of cake. The room was freezing, but it wasn't long before the spinal was in and my legs got warm and numb! DJ came in and it was pretty quick, Ryan came our screaming at 8:22am! The rest was a blur, I have no idea how long it took to get me cleaned up and into recovery. DJ took tons of pics, and so did the nurses. He came back to me to report how our son was several times, and before long I was holding my baby and being wheeled into recovery. Recovery was quick, maybe an hour. They kept an eye on my vitals and checked out baby too. I even got to try and nurse, went pretty well and he knew just what to do!

We then headed to our room.....I was ok until the end of the ride when I got queasy and ended up throwing up. No big deal, I puke from motion often anyways!

Our room (337) was at the end of a hall, and very quiet! There were a lot of discharges that day and it seemed like the whole maternity floor was empty! The nurses were wonderful, I give them many kudos for dealing with new mom "clean up". Ryan and I did great, he only ever left the room without me for midnight checks in the nursery and his little snip. They always brought him right back within an hour. The food at Highland was pretty good! I was pretty hungry too, but liked everything I had for meals. DJ said the cafeteria was a different story, not great by any means! We were there until Monday, and every morning they had a breakfast for mom and dad in the family waiting room......it was delicious! We are "buffet" lovers anyways, always eating gobs at the casino or while at an All Inclusive resort......so this kind of food is right up our ally! I think I ate a pound of bacon a day! It was cooked to perfection! They also had fruit filled pancakes, waffles, eggs, potatoe things, fruit, cereal, pastries, etc.......I looked forward to breakfast every morning!

Recovery has been a breeze, little to no pain! I have been taking it very easy, DJ was off the first week and was a saint! He waited on me hand and foot, took care of the dog and house chores (inside and out!)! He had to go back to work this week, but we are ok. I can't drive yet, but only until Friday.....then we are free! We miss having daddy home, it was really nice to have bonding time with him. He will take some more time off in August when we attempt a 12 hour drive to M.O. to visit his family! I am lucky to be off until Sept 8th, and then it is back to work for Ryan and I.

I am so in love with our boy, I know he will eventually start wiping away all the kisses I keep planting on his sweet face. Until then, he will be smooched beyond his wildest dreams!

Picking a birthday......

We need to decide when our son will be born (unless of course he decides to come before the day we pick!)......this shouldn't be such a hard choice, but it is!

My OB suggested we choose a c section date, between the 29th and his due date. There is a really good chance I will not be able to deliver him, so she sees no point in an induction that could very well end in a section anyways.

His U/S yesterday has him estimated at 8lbs 13oz right now....with 12 days to go he could be about 9 1/2lbs. Everything looks great, the Polyhydramnios (extra amniotic fluid) has resolved itself. He passed the NST once again and we don't need to do those anymore! During the ultrasound, he had his foot up by his face! Poor kid is running out of space! We have pics, but they are not very good....he is to squished to get any good shots. We did see the best "money shot" ever......they were 100% sure he was a he at the 20 week U/S. We are now 150% sure, no mistaken them parts! He sure wasn't shy! He did not like being poked by the U/S thing though....he kept kicking and pushing back.

I am ok with having a section, it sure beats laboring for a day only to end up on the table anyways. I have to call the office today with a date, I need to find out when my OB will be available for surgery. I have a check up scheduled with her on the 1st......so I know it won't be that day!

Yikes.....it has been awhile!

I won't be such a lazy blogger once Ryan comes.....I will keep it up to date for my out of town readers as much as possible!

I will be 38 weeks tomorrow! There is a light at the end of the tunnel! This will be a short post, but i promise to update Wednesday! We have a NST (non stress test), Ultrasound, and OB appt Wednesday morning. We will find out how big the "moose" is, and what our plans for delivery may be.

If he is still huge, my OB has been talking a c section around the 29th. This would help avoid the risk of Shoulder dystocia.

What is shoulder dystocia?

Shoulder dystocia occurs when, after delivery of the fetal head, the baby's anterior shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pubic bone. If this happens, the remainder of the baby does not follow the head easily out of the vagina as it usually does during vaginal deliveries.

The major concern of shoulder dystocia is damage to the upper brachial plexus nerves. These supply the sensory and motor components of the shoulder, arm and hands.[2] The aetiology of injury to the foetus is debated, but a probable mechanism is manual stretching of the nerves, which in itself can cause injury. Furthermore, excess tension may physically tear the nerve roots out from the neonatal spinal column, resulting in total dysfunction. The ventral roots (motor pathway) are most prone to injury, as they are in the plane of greatest tension (anterior, sensory nerves are somewhat protected due to the usual inward movement of the shoulder).

Until Wednesday!

34 week OB appt.....baby is BIG!

Well, I have a big baby. I am 34 weeks and the ultrasound has him over the 90%ile and about 7lbs 6oz already. I know this could be a high estimate, but she said once they are over 90% that it doesn't matter......they are big.

My OB gave me a slip to repeat the 1hr glucose, but said it was up to me. I also had a NST (non stress test) test today (baby did fine) and will start going to the OB weekly and having weekly NST as well. I have a follow up U/S scheduled for 38 weeks.

I have a higher amount of fluid around the baby than normal, but my OB said it is typical of bigger babies. The only issue (if it doesn't resolve itself) with that will be if my water breaks, I would have to go to hospital right away due to the risk of the cord coming out first with the extra fluid.

Crud......this pregnancy has been so routine!

Nursery pictures!

Here are some up to date pics of the nursery in progress! The decor is just about done. The bassinet, swing, and stroller will not be in there. Ignore the TV tray with my plants, this room has the best sunlight for growing seeds! The room needs curtains, I just have not found what I am looking for yet! I am hoping to also find some sort of a book shelf to put in the corner where the swing is.

All pics will get HUGE if you click on them.....you can really see detail if you need to! lol I will also throw in my 30 week pic, although most have already seen it on the boards or on facebook.
